Xavier Garcias joined the Duke coaching staff in March 2023, and serves as a graduate assistant coach working primarily with the defensive line.
Prior to his time in Durham, Garcias spent one season (2022) on staff at Southern Methodist University as a defensive graduate assistant working with the defensive line. While with the Mustangs, Garcias mentored defensive tackle Elijah Chatman to All-American Athletic Conference honors.Â
Before joining the SMU staff, he spent two years (2020-21) as a defensive graduate assistant coach at Temple University. While in Philadelphia, Garcias helped coach a productive defensive line which included second team All-AAC defensive end Arnold Ebiketie. Â Â
For the 2018 and 2019 seasons, Garcia spent time at Angelo State University and the University of Central Oklahoma, respectively, serving as a defensive line graduate assistant. While with the Rams, Garcias helped mentor Harlon Hill Trophy finalist and Gene Upshaw Award winner Markus Jones. During his time in Edmond, Okla., Garcias worked closely with all-conference selection Mike Rios.
Garcias began his coaching career at New Mexico Military Institute Junior College, where he coached linebackers for the 2017 season.
Garcias began his playing career at New Mexico Military Institute, where he saw action in 25 career games over a three-year span (2013-15), earning all-conference honors in 2014 and 2015. He transferred to Eastern Kentucky University prior to the 2016 season and played in 11 games, making 10 starts at defensive end. He totaled 29 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, four quarterback hurries and one forced fumble during his brief tenure with the Colonels.
A native of Austin, Texas, Garcias graduated in 2017 from Eastern Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in general studies. He later added a master’s degree in higher education from Temple in 2021.Â
