Jonathan Brewer joined the Blue Devil gridiron program in December 2023 and serves as offensive coordinator. Brewer also coaches Duke’s quarterbacks.

Brewer previously worked under Manny Diaz at the University of Miami, where he spent two seasons (2020-21) as a senior offensive quality control coach.

In Durham in 2024, Brewer mentored quarterback Maalik Murphy to a record-setting season. Murphy completed 254-of-421 (.603) passes for 2,933 yards with 26 touchdowns. He set or matched Blue Devil single-season standards for touchdown passes, games with two or more touchdown passes (9), games with three or more touchdown passes (6), touchdown passes of 20+ yards (15), game-winning touchdowns in the fourth quarter or OT in the same season (3), games with 200 or more passing yards (11) and wins by a starting quarterback (9).

Brewer also guided Henry Belin IV through the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. Belin IV completed 25-of-44 (.568) passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns in the postseason contest. His 25 completions are tied for the sixth most by a Duke quarterback in a bowl game in program history while his 44 attempts and two touchdown passes are each the fourth most.

Prior to arriving in Durham, Brewer served a second stint on staff at Southern Methodist University as the quarterbacks coach for two seasons (2022-23). He was elevated his final year to co-offensive coordinator. While in Dallas, Brewer helped the Mustangs to an 18-9 overall record and a 13-3 mark in American Athletic Conference (AAC) play. SMU earned consecutive bowl invitations and claimed the 2023 AAC title following a 26-14 victory over Tulane.

During his most recent two seasons, the Mustangs’ offense ranked in the top-15 nationally in red zone offense, scoring offense and total offense. During his final year, SMU ranked in the top-25 in 11 major categories – fifth in first down offense (312), sixth in scoring offense (40.6) and passing yards per completion (14.82), ninth in red zone offense (.929) and tackles for loss allowed (3.77), 13th in sacks allowed (1.15), 14th in total offense (465.5), 16th in team passing efficiency (156.09), 19th in passing offense (285.1), 20th in turnovers lost (13) and 24th in fumbles lost (5). The Mustangs also ranked third in the country in scoring offense in the first half, trailing just Oregon and Oklahoma.

Individually in 2023, Brewer mentored eight to All-AAC honors, including quarterback Preston Stone, who garnered a third team nod during his first year as the Mustangs’ starter. The Dallas native completed 206-of-344 pass attempts for 3,197 yards with 28 touchdowns against six interceptions and was a three-time AAC Offensive Player of the Week selection. Stone ranked 10th nationally in passing touchdowns, 15th in passing efficiency (161.3), 21st in passing yards and 23rd in passing yards per game (266.4) and total offense (282.9).

In his first season as the quarterbacks coach at SMU, Brewer helped the Mustangs set school marks in passing yards (4,117) and first downs (331), while also ranking second in program lore for passing touchdowns (36) and total plays (1,005) and third in scoring (484), passing yards per game (316.7), completion percentage (.649), completions (333), total offense (6,147) and first downs passing (174).

Under Brewer’s guidance in 2022, quarterback Tanner Mordecai ranked eighth nationally in passing touchdowns (33) and 11th in passing yards per game (293.7). In his final season, he set SMU’s career record for touchdown passes (72), touchdowns responsible for (76), games with four-plus passing touchdowns (7) and 300-yard passing games (13). He also finished second in program history in career total offense (7,454) and third in passing yards (7,152).

Additionally, Mordecai set the program and AAC single-game mark with nine touchdown passes against Houston in 2022. Seven of those scores came in the opening frame, to tie an NCAA record for touchdown passes in a half. He became the only player in FBS history to have seven passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in a half. He joined Lamar Jackson (vs. Charlotte, 2016) as the only FBS players on record with eight touchdowns responsible for in a half.

Before SMU, Brewer spent two seasons (2020-21) on Diaz’s staff at Miami as a senior offensive quality control coach. During those two years, Miami ranked in the top-30 in fourth down conversion percentage, passing offense, passing efficiency and scoring offense.

Miami’s 2021 squad finished the regular season winning five of its last six games, including wins over top-20 opponents in No. 18 NC State and No. 17 Pittsburgh. The 2020 Hurricanes finished 8-3 (7-2 ACC) overall, marking the second time in program history Miami won seven ACC games. That team concluded the year 18th in the final College Football Playoff rankings.

In that first season, the Hurricanes jumped from No. 122 in the FBS to No. 17 in red zone offense (+105), from No. 98 to No. 32 in total offense (+66), from No. 90 to No. 26 in scoring offense (+64), from No. 84 to No. 20 in first downs gained (+64) and from No. 52 to No. 29 in passing offense (+23).

Brewer had his first stint at SMU during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, when he served as an offensive quality control analyst. In 2019, he was part of a record-setting offense that helped the Mustangs to a 10-3 season, marking the most wins in program history for a single-season since 1984. SMU concluded the year with its highest national ranking since 1985 after finishing at No. 15.

Additionally in 2019, SMU set the program single-season marks for scoring (544), scoring offense (41.8), total yards (6,368), total yards per game (489.8), total plays (1,037), rushing touchdowns (35), total first downs (322) and total touchdowns (73), while also tying the passing touchdowns record (35). The Mustangs finished the year ranked in the top-15 nationally in scoring offense (41.8), total offense (489.8) and passing offense (309.0).

Brewer also made stops at the University of Connecticut, where he served one season (2017) as an offensive analyst working with the quarterbacks, and Auburn University, where he was on staff for four years as an offensive analyst (2016) and graduate assistant (2013-15). Prior to entering the collegiate ranks, Brewer served as an offensive coordinator and assistant coach at various high schools in Arkansas from 2010-12.

He graduated from Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2010 and received his master’s degree from Auburn in adult education in 2014.

Brewer is married to the former Danielle Stevens of Rogers, Ark., and they are the parents of two sons, Wynton and Walter, and one daughter, Everlee Grace.
