Gavin Spurrier joined the Duke coaching staff in August 2023, and serves as an offensive quality control coach, working primarily with the tight ends.
Prior to arriving in Durham, Spurrier was a four-year member (2019-22) of the football program at Duke University. He was a four-time ACC Honor Roll selection and the recipient of the Blue Devils’ Micah Harris Trinity Teammate Award in 2020, which is an award annually to an individual who is a true teammate and showcases character, unselfishness, compassion and pride.
Spurrier graduated from Duke in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and a double minor in neuroscience and religion. He added a master’s degree in management studies from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business in 2023. His father, Steve, is a member of the coaching staff at Mississippi State University and is a 1994 graduate of Duke after earning two varsity letters (1992-93) as a member of the football program. His grandfather, Steve Spurrier, served as the head coach of the Blue Devils from 1987-89, compiling an overall ledger of 20-13-1, and was the ACC Coach of the Year selection in both 1988 and 1989. He guided Duke to the ACC Championship and an All-American Bowl appearance in 1989. Additionally, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player (1986), following his Heisman Trophy winning career at Florida, and coach (2017), after guiding Florida to the national championship in 1996 and becoming the winningest coach in Gator (1990-2001) and University of South Carolina (2005-15) history.
