Danny Pearman, who has coached in 16 bowl games and was on the staff at Alabama when the Crimson Tide captured the national championship in 1992, is in his first year on the Duke coaching staff. Pearman coaches the Blue Devil tight ends while also serving as special teams coordinator.
In 2007, Pearman’s tight end corps will feature three-time letterwinner Nick Stefanow as well as underclassmen Brandon King and Brett Huffman.
On the special teams front, Duke returns starting kicker Joe Surgan as well as return specialists Chris Davis, Ronnie Drummer, Jabari Marshall and Leon Wright. Both Davis and Drummer have returned kickoffs for touchdowns in their careers, while Marshall ranked fifth in the ACC last year in kickoff returns at 25.1 yards per return. Davis and Drummer give Duke two players that have returned kickoffs for touchdowns in their respective careers while Marshall finished fifth in the ACC with his 25.1 yards per kickoff return average in 2006. Wright is the leading candidate to handle the punt return duties for a second straight season.
In 2006, Pearman was a member of the staff at North Carolina, where he coached the defensive ends.
Prior to his one year at North Carolina, Pearman spent eight years on Frank Beamer’s staff at Virginia Tech helping the Hokies to a 78-23 ledger, two conference championships (1999 Big East & 2004 ACC) and eight bowl game berths. Pearman coached the tight ends and offensive tackles in Blacksburg as Virginia Tech won 10 or more games in five seasons. He mentored Jeff King, an All-ACC tight end who was a fifth round pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2006 NFL Draft, as well as Bob Slowikowski, a tight end selected in the sixth round by the Dallas Cowboys in 2002.
Pearman was on staff at Alabama the previous eight seasons. He was on Alabama’s staff under head coaches Gene Stallings (1990-96) and Mike DuBose (1997-98). He began as a graduate assistant coach in 1990 before being elevated to assistant coach a year later, mentoring the offensive tackles for six seasons and defensive tackles for two years while coordinating the special teams from 1991-98. During his stint in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide went 66-32, won the SEC and national championship in 1992 and captured SEC Western Division crowns in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996. Alabama won 10 or more games four times with Pearman on staff including the perfect 13-0 ledger in 1992 that concluded with a 34-13 triumph over Miami in the Sugar Bowl, securing the school’s 12th football national title.
After graduating from Clemson in 1987 with a degree in finance, Pearman began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater. He spent two years with the Tigers as they Tigers won the league title in 1988 and played in the Citrus and Gator Bowls.
In all, Pearman has coached in 10 bowl game wins ? 1989 Gator, 1991 Blockbuster, 1993 Sugar, 1993 Gator, 1995 Citrus, 1996 Outback, 1998 Music City, 2001 Gator and 2003 San Francisco.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Pearman earned three varsity letters as a tight end at Clemson, playing under head coach Danny Ford and helping the Tigers win two ACC championships in 1986 and 1987.
Pearman is married to the former Kristy Sewell of Birmingham, Ala., and the couple has three children, Taylor Brooke, Tanner Ryan and Trent Joseph.
