Billy Lewis joined the Duke coaching staff in August of 2019 and serves as a graduate assistant coach working primarily with the defense.
In his first season on staff, Lewis worked alongside assistant coach Lanier Goethie with Duke’s linebackers. Senior Koby Quansah was a third team All-ACC pick after posting 105 tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three pass breakups, two quarterback pressures and two fumble recoveries and became the ninth linebacker in the David Cutcliffe Era at Duke to post 100+ tackles in a season. Also in 2019, redshirt freshman Shaka Heyward finished fourth on the team in tackles with 68 and added 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception, two pressures and two fumble recoveries. The Hoschton, Ga., native logged three double-digit tackle games including a career-best 15 tackles against North Carolina.
Prior to coming to Durham, Lewis spent two seasons (2017-18) as the recruiting operations assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While there he helped construct a top-50 recruiting class in 2018, a top-30 recruiting class in 2019 and helped develop a top-25 recruiting class for the 2020 season before his departure.
In 2016, Lewis worked for one year at his alma mater Stevenson University, serving as a defensive assistant. While with the Mustangs, Lewis worked primarily with the outside linebackers and safeties.
Lewis graduated from Stevenson in December of 2016 with a degree in public history and was a four-year letterwinner (2012-13-14-15) and three-year team captain with the Mustangs. He graduated as the all-time career leader in interceptions, while being named a two-time First Team All-Middle Atlantic Conference Honoree (2016 and 2015), a 2016 D3 ECAC’s First Team and Third Team All-Region selection, and a two-time Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team (2016 and 2015) recipient. Lewis earned a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Wisconsin in May of 2019 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in continuing studies from Duke.
