Alex Garwig joined the Duke coaching staff in March 2023, and serves as a senior analyst working primarily with the safeties.
Garwig came to Durham after a one-year stint at Texas A&M University as the defensive analyst. While in College Station, Garwig worked closely with Aggies’ co-defensive coordinator and current Duke defensive coordinator Tyler Santucci. He assisted with game-planning and positional development during his short stint with the Aggies.
Prior to Texas A&M, Garwig spent two seasons (2020-21) at the University of Mississippi as a senior defensive analyst. During his time in Oxford, Ole Miss posted an overall record of 15-8, including an appearance in the 2021 Super Bowl.
Before that, Garwig served as a defensive graduate assistant at the University of Massachusetts for the 2019 season. In his short tenure with the Minutemen, Garwig worked primary with the nickelbacks and sam linebackers.
Garwig got his coaching start as a defensive graduate assistant for three seasons (2016-18) at the University of Maryland. In 2018, he helped mentor defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr., to All-Big Ten recognition, after the Lanham, Md., native led the conference and was ninth in the country, averaging 5.8 solo tackles per game. He finished his final season with the Terrapins recording a team-high 87 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and five pass breakups. Brooks Jr., later went on to be selected as the 198th pick in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Garwig graduated from the University of Michigan in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. While working toward his degree, Garwig served as a defensive coaching intern, the head student manager and player personnel intern for the football program. He also obtained his master’s degree in professional studies from Maryland in 2018.
