Empowering student-athletes through scholarships, facilities and program support
Our Mission
The Iron Dukes supports Duke student-athletes as they pursue excellence in the classroom, in competition and beyond. As the fundraising arm of Duke Athletics, Iron Dukes gives alumni, families and friends a direct way to invest in scholarships, strengthen facilities and meet the everyday needs that help Duke’s 27 varsity programs compete at the highest level.
Annual Fund
The Iron Dukes Annual Fund provides essential, flexible support for Duke’s 27 varsity programs, with scholarship support as the top priority. In 2025–26, a single athletic scholarship costs $97,181, and total scholarship expenses approach $30 million. Annual gifts help ensure Duke student-athletes have the resources to succeed in the classroom and in competition.
Varsity Club
The Iron Dukes Varsity Club provides sport-specific support for all 27 varsity teams, as well as Marching Band and Cheerleading. Designated gifts help fund each program’s annual priorities and provide resources tailored to the needs of that team.
Endowments
Endowments create a lasting impact by generating annual income in perpetuity. Approximately 28 percent of Duke Athletics’ scholarship costs are covered by endowment income. Endowment gifts, which typically begin around $100,000, help provide long-term stability for scholarships and program support.

Planned and deferred gifts help shape Duke Athletics for future generations while complementing current support. Membership
Iron Dukes membership begins at $120 annually, and members may pledge and pay in installments throughout the fiscal year, which runs from July 1 through June 25. Membership supports scholarships, facilities and program needs across Duke Athletics while strengthening the overall student-athlete experience.
