Duke and ACCN Announce 2019 Men's Soccer Slate

DURHAM, N.C.—Duke men’s soccer head coach John Kerr has announced the 2019 schedule that features 19 regular season games, 11 of which will be played at the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium. In addition, the ACC Network has announced its 2019 broadcast schedule, featuring two regular season games for the Blue Devils.

The ACCN officially launches August 22 with Duke men’s soccer making its debut September 6 against Princeton. The network will televise 28 ACC men’s soccer games. Included in the telecasts will the innovative keeper cam technology.

ACCN Men’s Soccer Coverage

ACCN will exclusively televise 28 men’s soccer games in its debut year – representing a 92 percent increase in the number of ACC men’s soccer events available on a linear network over last year. Coupled with the 62 women’s fall sports events set for ACCN announced on Wednesday, ACC fall sports will enjoy the most national coverage ever for the 2019 season.

“ACC fans are passionate about their sports programs due in large part to their rich tradition of winning, especially in soccer,” said Stacie McCollum, ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions. “From top to bottom, the level of play in the ACC is unparalleled, and ACCN will showcase the best teams in the country as they compete during the regular season. Also, for the first time ever, every game of the ACC Men’s Soccer Championship will be televised.”

Duke’s 2019 Schedule at a Glance

The 2019 slate will be a demanding one, featuring 11 teams that qualified for the 2018 NCAA Tournament, including two which advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Duke will start the 2019 season with three preseason games, two of which are at home, while the official season opener comes in the John Rennie Nike Invitational August 30-September 1.

The Blue Devils will hold their first practice August 14 and just three days later will host South Carolina in the first preseason of three preseason contests. Duke will travel to UNC Wilmington August 20 and host Coastal Carolina August 23 in conjunction with Duke freshmen orientation.

John Rennie Nike Invitational – August 30 and September 1

The 2019 season officially gets underway August 30 with the John Rennie Nike Invitational. The Blue Devils welcome Furman and Cal State Bakersfield for the Friday and Sunday games, respectively. Furman finished 2018 with a 13-7-2 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Paladins return Southern Conference Goalkeeper of the Year Ben Hale and two SoCon All-Freshman Team picks. Cal State Bakersfield went 5-12-1 last season.

September a Grueling Month

The rest of September will be a grueling one for the Blue Devils as Duke will take to the field six times in 21 days. Three of those will be against ACC opponents and four of the six teams were NCAA Tournament qualifiers a year ago.

Duke will make its 2019 television debut September 6 against 2018 Ivy League champion Princeton. The game will be televised on the new ACC Network, which officially launches August 22. The game will be at 4 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.

The Ivy League tour continues Sunday September 8 against Harvard. The game will be played at North Carolina’s newly renovated soccer and lacrosse stadium.

ACC play opens September 13 against rival Virginia on ESPNU at 6 p.m. Duke shut out Virginia 2-0 last season for its second consecutive victory over the Cavaliers.

Duke will take its first road trip September 20 to play Clemson and also will travel down Tobacco Road for the annual rivalry game with the Tar Heels September 27. In the middle of the ACC trio is a Monday night matchup with SMU, which was the American Athletic Conference Champion and finished 10-5-3.

Duke will look to avenge a pair of heartbreaking losses to the Tar Heels last season and also will aim to upend the Tigers for the first time since 2013.

Six Dates at Koskinen Highlight Second Month of Campaign

The Blue Devils will host six opponents from October 1 to November 1. Among them are NCAA Tournament qualifiers NC State, High Point, Denver and Virginia Tech. A road meeting at 2018 NCAA quarterfinalist Notre Dame is the toughest of the three road games to close the regular season.

October starts with Wright State on a Tuesday night at Koskinen Stadium. The Raiders finished 13-3-3 and 6-1-1 in Horizon League games. Duke will have a Tuesday night reprieve as it meets Syracuse at Koskinen Stadium Oct. 4 and travels to Notre Dame Oct. 11.

Two NCAA Tournament foes await October 18 and 22 when NC State and High Point come to Durham, respectively. NC State returned to the NCAA postseason and finished 10-7-3 overall, while the Panthers suffered just two setbacks before falling to James Madison in the NCAA Tournament.

After a trip to play Pittsburgh October 25, Duke finishes its regular season campaign with a pair of tough outings against Denver and Virginia Tech. Denver earned the No. 15 seed last season in the NCAA Tournament after losing just three times during the year, while Virginia Teach advanced to the third round as the No. 12 overall seed in the field of 48.

Technology and innovation will be at the forefront of ACCN’s coverage of men’s soccer as telecasts will feature ESPN’s exclusive “Keeper Cam” goal post camera system currently used on ESPN’s Major League Soccer productions. The technology utilizes cameras mounted inside the goal posts at both the four-inch and two-and one-half inch heights to provide unique views of the area in front of the goal, as well as straight down the goal line. The ACC will be the first and only collegiate conference to deploy the camera system.
