DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior outfielder Griffin Conine was drafted with the No. 52 overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2018 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft Monday. Conine is the sixth Blue Devil in program history to be selected in the third round or higher and the highest pick since Marcus Stroman was taken in the first round of the 2012 draft.
Conine is the first Blue Devil taken in the 2018 draft and the 15th drafted under head coach Chris Pollard’s tenure.
One of the top power hitters in the country, Conine has totaled 33 extra base hits in 2018, including a team-best 18 home runs to go along with 14 doubles and 52 RBI. The two-time All-ACC pick is the first Blue Devil with 15 or more home runs in a season since Nate Freiman in 2009 and ranks tied for sixth in school history with 31 career longballs. Conine earned NCAA Athens Regional All-Tournament Team honors after helping Duke to the first NCAA Super Regional in program history.
As a sophomore, Conine was the first Blue Devil with 50-plus RBI in a season since Freiman (62) in 2009 and the first Duke player with 10 or more homers in a season since Jake Lemmerman (10) in 2010. During the summer of 2017, earned the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Robert A. McNeece Award, given to the league’s top pro prospect as voted on by Major League Baseball scouts. In 45 games with the Cotuit Kettleers, Conine hit .326 with 58 hits, 11 home runs, five doubles and 31 RBI. He was selected to the CCBL All-Star Game and garnered West Division MVP honors as well.
