| NOTES |
DURHAM, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Blue Devils welcome Furman and Navy for the second week of action this weekend at Koskinen Stadium. Duke continues its non-conference slate after topping Drexel, 9-7, in last Sunday’s season opener in Durham.
Lock Down D Seals Season-Opening Win
• Trailing 6-5 at halftime of Sunday’s season opener against Drexel, the Blue Devils finished with a stingy defensive effort to earn a 9-7 victory.
• The defense held the Dragons to just seven shots and one goal in the final 30 minutes.
• Duke’s effort in the ride limited Drexel to just 5-of-11 on second half clearing attempts.
• The defensive performance set up the Blue Devil attack to round out the contest on a 6-1 scoring run.
Balanced Scoring Against the Dragons
• Junior Kyra Harney and sophomores Olivia Jenner and Ellie Majure notched two goals each in Sunday’s season-opening win against Drexel.
• Four different Blue Devils also recorded assists, including Jenner to give her a team-high three points on the afternoon.
• Majure’s two tallies marked a career high.
Blue Devil Rookies Shine in First Start
• Freshmen Catherine Cordrey and Callie Humphrey started their first collegiate contest, joining the midfield for the season opener against Drexel.
• Humphrey stuffed the stat sheet in her Duke debut, recording two ground balls, one draw control and a team-high three caused turnovers.
• Cordrey finished with one ground ball and one caused turnover in addition to two shots on goal.
• Cordrey and Humphrey came to Durham after helping lead Summit High School (N.J.) to the 2016 state title.
Jenner Back on the Draw
• Sophomore attacker Olivia Jenner did not miss a beat in her return to the draw circle Sunday.
• Jenner accounted for five draws as Duke took the category by a 13-4 margin.
• Last season saw Jenner surpass Emma Hamm (‘12) for the most draw controls recorded by a Duke player in a single season (110).
• With 115 career draw controls, Jenner is now 10th on the Blue Devils’ all-time list in the category.
New Look Between the Pipes
• Following the graduation of four-year starting goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, the Blue Devils featured a new starter in the net Sunday for the first time since March 2, 2013.
• A two-time All-American, Duryea concluded her Duke career ranked second in program history in saves (613) and goalkeeper wins (48).
• Sophomore Jamie Lockwood got the starting nod Sunday against the Dragons, finishing with seven saves and one ground ball while allowing seven goals.
• In addition to Lockwood, the Blue Devils enter the spring with the services of junior Oralee Hespenheide and freshman Gabbe Cadoux, joined the goalkeeper group out of McDonogh School (Md.), where she was a three-year starter and Under Armour All-American.
Furman Series History
• Duke and the Paladins will square off for the first time in program history Friday.
• The Blue Devils are 2-0 historically against teams from the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Scouting the Paladins
• Furman enters its third season as a program after compiling a 22-14 ledger over the last two campaigns.
• The Paladins feature an experienced roster, returning their top 10 leading scorers from a year ago.
• Paige Gamble (32g, 30a) and Ashley Trice (49g, 5a) both return after combining for 116 points last spring.
• Goalkeeper Maggie Friel is also back to anchor the defense after posting an 8.91 goals against average and 7-5 record last season.
• Gamble, senior defender Samantha Eckels and senior midfielder Devon Horine were all first team All-Atlantic Sun selections a year ago.
Navy Series History
• Duke leads the overall series against the Mids, 4-0.
• The Blue Devils claimed an 18-9 victory over Navy last February in Annapolis.
• Sophomore Olivia Jenner won 13 of the 29 total draws for the contest in her return to her hometown.
• 2016 graduate Kelci Smesko and junior Kyra Harney combined for 10 tallies in the win.
Scouting the Mids
• Navy downed Longwood, 20-3, in its season opener last Sunday in Annapolis.
• The Mids held the advantage in shots (39-10), shots on goal (30-7) and ground balls (24-9) in the victory.
• Junior attacker Julia Collins (4g, 1a), junior defender Blake Smith (4cto, 4gb) and freshman attacker Kelly Larkin (3g, 4a) were honored with Corvias Patriot League Player of the Week awards for their performances against the Lancers.
• Navy returns nine starters, including the 2016 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year in Collins, for the 2017 campaign.
• The Mids are led by head coach Cindy Timchal, the NCAA’s all-time leader in career wins (474).
• Timchal oversaw Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel during her playing career at Maryland (1990-93).
