Blue Devils Add Emily Schubert in Late Signing Period
DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University women’s basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie announced Saturday the addition of 6-4 post Emily Schubert during the late signing period. Schubert, who hails from Elizabethton, Tenn., signed a national letter of intent and will be a freshman with the Blue Devils in 2016-17.
“Emily is a rare multi-sport student athlete,” said McCallie. “Her strong and very fundamental post game is enhanced greatly by her ability to compete in the 400/800 meters and discus in track. She is an exceptional student, while leading her high school class academically. We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Emily and her amazing family to our Duke family.”
Schubert attends Elizabethton High School where she averaged 11.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks as a senior. She earned all-region, all-district and all-conference accolades in her final year. Over her career, Schubert led Elizabethton to a 124-10 record with four district, regional and sectional titles. Schubert helped her squad to Elizabethton’s first 2A State Championship in 2014.
An accomplished cross country and track and field standout at Elizabethton, Schubert ran the 800 and 400 meters, finished third in the discus at the state championship as a sophomore and junior and placed sixth at the state championship as a sophomore in the 4x800m relay. In cross country, she was seventh in the region as a senior, fourth in her region as a junior and 45th at the state championship as a junior. Her team finished fifth in the state championship her senior campaign.
Schubert will join Leaonna Odom, a top-10 recruit and McDonald’s All-America selection on the roster in 2016-17 as the Blue Devils return three starters – senior Oderah Chidom, redshirt junior Rebecca Greenwell and freshman Kyra Lambert. Duke will also return freshman Crystal Primm, freshman Haley Gorecki, redshirt freshman Lyneé Belton, freshman Faith Suggs and sophomore Erin Mathias. The Blue Devils will welcome All-America selection Lexie Brown to the fold after redshirting this past season and are expecting junior Kendall Cooper back on the court.
