DURHAM, N.C. – Following wins over Georgia Tech and Miami, Duke outside hitter Emily Sklar has earned ACC Player of the Week honors as announced by the league office Monday. The Blue Devils also re-entered the AVCA Coaches Poll this week, taking the No. 25 position.
Sklar was sensational in leading the Blue Devils to two ACC wins to start the conference schedule. The San Jose, Calif., native amassed 34 kills over the two matches, averaging 4.86 kills per set while hitting an impressive .386.
Friday against Georgia Tech, Sklar knocked down a match-high 18 kills on .357 hitting. She followed that performance with 16 kills, hitting a blistering .429, to lead all players Sunday versus Miami. Sklar also picked up eight digs in both contests to help a Blue Devil defense which limited its opponents to a combined .190 hitting percentage on the weekend.
Sklar has totaled 15 or more kills in each of Duke’s past five matches, all Blue Devil wins. In addition, she has posted a hitting percentage of .350 or better in four of those contests.
Monday’s ACC Player of the Week citation is the third of Sklar’s career and first for a Blue Devil this season. Sklar picked up the weekly honor twice during the 2013 campaign.
Sklar and the 25th-ranked Blue Devils kick off a four-match road swing this weekend. Duke travels to Virginia Friday, Oct. 3, then heads to Notre Dame Sunday, Oct. 5.
