DURHAM, N.C.- With the WNBA offseason underway, 11 different Blue Devils are playing overseas as Alana Beard has recently joined the ranks of Duke grads abroad. Listed below is an update on each of the Duke alums through games of Feb. 17.
Sheana Mosch
Homend Antakya (Turkey) - Shooting Guard/Small Forward
2011-12 Stats: 16 Games, 12.7 PPG, 2.0 RPG, 1.5 APG, 0.9 SPG
With the end of the season in sight, Mosch continues to provide stellar play for Antakya. On Feb. 4 in Antakya’s upset of Optimum TED, Mosch scored a game-high 18 points on six of seven shooting, including four of five from beyond the arc. Antakya now holds ninth place in the 12-team Turkish league.
Monique Currie
Homend Antakya (Turkey) - Shooting Guard/Small Forward
Drafted: 1st Round (3rd pick) by the Charlotte Sting (2006)
2011-12 Stats: 7 Games, 16.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 2.1 APG, 0.9 SPG
After joining Antakya halfway through the season, Currie has had an instant impact on the club’s scoring. Not to be outdone by college teammate Mosch, Currie recorded a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) against Optimum TED. The Duke grad continues to lead Antakya in scoring and at the free throw line, hitting on 87.5 percent of her attempts.
Jessica Foley
Townsville Fire (Australia) - Guard
Drafted: 3rd Round by the Indiana Fever
2011-12 Stats: 21 Games, 13.4 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, 1.0 BPG
Foley was an excellent three-point shooter for Townsville this season, hitting 40.5 percent of her attempts so far this season. Townsville has not played since Feb. 3.
Mistie (Bass) Mims
Challes-Les-Eaux (France) - Center
Drafted: 2nd Round (21st overall) by the Phoenix Mercury (2006)
2011-12 Stats: 19 Games, 19.8 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.1 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.5 BPG
Mims continues to be Challes-Les-Eaux’s go-to scorer this season, averaging eight points per game more than second-leading scorer Danielle Page (11.4). Her 22 points and five rebounds in Challes’ 64-53 victory over Charleville on Feb. 11 were partially overshadowed by four fouls and eight turnovers. Challes (15-4) is now second in the league standings, behind only Bourges, also 15-4.
Chante Black
Shandog (China) - Center
Drafted: 1st Round (10th overall) by the Connecticut Sun (2009)
2011-12 Stats: 19 Games, 16.5 PPG, 12.4 RPG, 1.7 APG, 1.3 SPG, 1.9 BPG
Black finished the season as the second-leading scoring on an offensive-minded Shandog team which struggled to an 11th-place finish in the 12-team Women’s Chinese Basketball Association.
Carrem Gay
Toulouse Metropole (France) - Forward
2011-12 Stats: 15 Games, 12.3 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 1.0 APG, 2.5 SPG, 0.8 BPG
Gay continues to be a consistently strong performer for Toulouse Metropole, leading the team in both scoring and rebounding. In a Feb. 11 matchup with Voiron, Gay dropped 18 points on eight of 12 shooting as Toulouse picked up the 69-59 victory. Toulouse is currently third in the league standings.
Bridgette Mitchell
Energa Torun (Poland) - Shooting Guard/Small Forward
2011-12 Stats: 17 Games, 11.6 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 0.9 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.7 BPG
Mitchell was again held out of Energa’s Feb. 4 game against Gorzow – a 91-58 Energa win – but did see action in the team’s Feb. 8 contest against Poznan, coming off the bench to score 12 points in 16 minutes. The two wins on the week lifted Energa to fourth in the league standings.
Jasmine Thomas
Frisco Sika Brno (Czech Republic) - Guard
Drafted: 1st Round (10th pick) by the Seattle Storm (2011)
2011-12 Stats: 18 Games, 13.2 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 2.2 APG, 3.7 SPG, 0.3 BPG
After a 2011 rookie season in the WNBA with the Washington Mystics in which she appeared in 34 games, Thomas is now 18 games into her overseas season with the Czech team Frisco Sika Brno. Thomas continues adding to her scoring average, on the strength of 15 and 23 points in her last two games, respectively. Frisco Sika (19-4) ranks second in the league standings but is well back of 26-0 USK Praha.
Krystal Thomas
Union Lyon (France) - Center
Drafted: 2nd Round (36th pick) by the Seattle Storm (2011)
2011-12 Stats: 16 Games, 5.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 0.7 APG, 0.6 SPG, 1.0 BPG
Union Lyon lost both of its most recent games despite strong efforts from Duke grad Thomas. In Lyon’s 65-72 loss to Aix-En-Provence, Thomas got the start and scored 14 points in 22 minutes. Her size and physical play have benefited Lyon, 13th in the league standings.
Karima Christmas
Bnot Hasharon (Israel) - Shooting Guard/Small Forward
Drafted: 2nd Round (23rd pick) by the Washington Mystics
2011-12 Stats: 14 Games, 20.2 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 2.0 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.8 BPG
After a rookie WNBA split between Tulsa and Washington, Christmas finds herself 12 games into the Israeli season. She continues to lead Bnot Hasharon in several offensive and defensive categories, including points and rebounds per game. In perhaps her most impressive scoring effort to date, Christmas poured in 27 points in a 75-66 victory over Hapoel T-A on Feb. 13.
Alana Beard
Elitzur Ramla (Israel) - Shooting Guard/Small Forward
Drafted: 1st Round (2nd pick) by the Washington Mystics
2011-12 Stats: 1 Game, 14.0 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 3.0 APG, 1.0 SPG, 2.0 BPG
Signed at the beginning of February by Elitzur Ramala, Beard makes her return to competitive basketball after dealing with ankle injuries. The Duke grad scored 14 points in her first game with the Israeli league team. Beard also signed with the LA Sparks to play in the WNBA when the season starts in May.
