DURHAM, N.C. – Fred Campbell, a former three-sport letterman at Duke University, will be enshrined into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 10 in Mars, Pa.
A native of Swarthmore, Pa., Campbell earned collegiate varsity letters at Duke in football, wrestling and track and field. On the gridiron, he was a first team All-ACC pick in 1954, was a member of two conference championship teams and helped the Blue Devils to the Orange Bowl on January 1, 1955, where Duke defeated Nebraska, 34-7. Campbell was selected by the Chicago Cardinals in the 1955 NFL Draft.
On the wrestling mat, Campbell lettered three seasons and served as team captain. In addition, he earned three letters as a member of Duke’s track and field program, throwing the shot put and discus.
After graduating from Duke with a bachelor of arts degree in political science in 1955, Campbell served in the U.S. Marines and later was a pioneer in the sports marketing field.
Campbell, who was recognized by his alma mater on the field during Duke’s home football game against North Carolina on October 20, is part of a 14-member group that marks the 50th class to be inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
