DURHAM, N.C. -- Rising sophomore Austin Cody shot 76-70=146 (+2) to tie for medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier at Colleton River Plantation - Dye Course (par 72, 7,300 yards) in Bluffton, S.C. Cody's two-under 70 in the final round was one of three under-par rounds for the tournament.
"I am very pleased with how I played the final round, knowing that I had to post a good round to advance," said Cody. "The U.S. Amateur will be a great experience and I can't wait to play in it this year."
Cody shared medalist honors with Jacob Burger (Clemson) and Tripp McAllister (Coastal Carolina), while W. Jay Degenhart finished one shot back to qualify for the U.S. Amateur.
Cody, a native of North Charleston, S.C., played well in the opening round on Monday but suffered a double-bogey on the final hole to post a four-over 76. He got off to a slow start in the second round with a two-over 38 on his opening nine holes. Cody recovered to card six birdies, one par and two bogeys on the back nine for a four-under 32. With a two-under 70 in the final round, he was able to gain five strokes on first round leader McAllister and grab a share of medalist honors.
The 2011 U.S. Amateur will take place August 22-28 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisc. and Blue Mound Golf and Country Club in Wauwatosa, Wisc.
