DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke University women’s soccer standout Rebecca Smith has been named a member and captain of the New Zealand squad that will participate in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will take place from June 26 through July 17 in Germany.
The Ferns will play in the very difficult Group B when the World Cup begins later this month. New Zealand qualified for the World Cup by winning the 2010 OFC Women’s Championship without surrendering a single goal.
Smith, a defender for New Zealand and 2002 Duke graduate, has been a member of the New Zealand national team since 2007 and played in the 2008 Olympics.
New Zealand will kick off action on June 27 against Japan and then will face England on July 1 and Mexico on July 5. Germany is the defending champion as it won the title in 2007 in China with Brazil finishing as the runner up and the United States third.
