DURHAM, N.C. - The reigning ACC Champion Duke basketball team was picked to finish second during the 2011-12 basketball season, as voted on by media in the ACC Preseason Men's Basketball Poll on Wednesday.
The Blue Devils, who return eight letterwinners from and three starters from last year's team, received two first-place votes and 649 total points to trail only North Carolina in the poll. Junior guard Seth Curry was one of six players selected to the Preseason All-ACC Team, and freshman guard Austin Rivers was named the Preseason Rookie of the Year.
Following Duke in the ACC Coaches Poll were Florida State (560 points), Virginia (463), Miami (455), Virginia Tech (411), Clemson (403), NC State (316), Maryland (264), Georgia Tech (176), Wake Forest (109) and Boston College (90).
The Blue Devils are coming off of a 32-5 season in 2010-11 that included a 13-3 ACC record, an ACC Tournament Championship and a run to the NCAA Sweet 16. Returning to the starting lineup for Duke are Curry, senior forward Miles Plumlee and junior forward Ryan Kelly.
Joining Curry on the Preseason All-ACC Team were North Carolina's Harrison Barnes, John Henson, and Tyler Zeller, Miami's Malcolm Grant and Virginia's Mike Scott. Barnes was tabbed Preseason Player of the Year.
Rivers, the son of Boston Celtics head coach and 13-year NBA veteran Doc Rivers, was a near unanimous choice for ACC Preseason Rookie of the Year. The 6-4 guard from Winter Park, Fla. (Winter Park) drew 57 of a possible 59 votes for the award.
