Duke Opens Its 97th Season Of Football
The 2009 season marks Duke’s 97th campaign of intercollegiate football, with the Blue Devils holding an all-time record of 448-458-31. Football was introduced at Duke by Dr. John Crowell, who coached then Trinity College to victories in its first two games ever — wins of 16-0 and 25-17 over North Carolina in 1888. After the 1894 season, football was banned at Duke by the Board of Trustees, but returned in high form in 1920 when Floyd Egan guided the team to a 4-0-1 ledger.
Duke-Richmond Series
Duke leads the all-time series with Richmond, 9-2. The Blue Devils won seven straight in the series from 1927 to 1979. The Spiders won the most recent meeting, 13-0 in Durham in 2006, the first game between the two schools in 27 years. Five of Duke’s nine victories in the series have been shutouts, including three wins by more than 60 points, 72-0 in 1927, 61-0 in 1943 and 67-0 in 1949. The Blue Devils also earned a 61-7 victory in 1944. In the 11 games between the two schools, Duke has outscored Richmond 408-36.
