Blaum & Klaasen Miss Cut At 109th U.S. Open

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Ryan Blaum closed his second round with a three-over 73 to finish with a five-over 145 and miss the U.S. Open cut by one stroke at Bethpage Black on Saturday. Clark Klaasen, a 2009 Duke graduate, shot a four-over 74 in the second round to close out the Open with a 10-over 150.

Blaum opened play on Saturday with 11 holes remaining in his second round. He parred his first five holes before carding a birdie on the par 5 fourth hole to move to one-over in the round. Blaum ran into trouble with a double-bogey on No. 6 and a bogey on No. 7 to slip to four-over. He rebounded with a birdie on the par 3 eighth hole and closed with a par on No. 9 to narrowly miss making a U.S. Open cut for the first time in his career.

Klaasen bogeyed his first hole of the day but quickly got the stroke back with a birdie on the par 4 ninth hole. He was unable to carry the momentum onto the backside as the Grand Rapids, Mich., native played his final nine holes at four-over after playing even-par on the front side. Klaasen suffered a double-bogey on No. 15 for the second straight day but rebounded to par No. 17 and No. 18 to close the tournament.

Ricky Barnes was the second round leader with an eight-under 132. Lucas Glover is one shot back followed by Mike Weir at six-under (134). Peter Hanson, David Duval and Azuma Yano are tied for fourth at three-under 137.

Third round action also got underway on Saturday.
