DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke men’s and women’s track & field squads are headed north for the IC4A and ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, respectively, held at Princeton University’s Weaver Stadium from Friday through Sunday, May 15-17. The squads will be sending those athletes who qualified for the first postseason meet.
The Duke men will look to build on last year's 18th place finish at the outdoor IC4A's, and the women on their 16th-place showing at ECAC's. Indoors in 2009, the Duke women came away with the team title at ECACs while the men took 12th at the IC4A indoor meet.
On Friday, Duke will see compete two field event athletes who have set Duke records in their events earlier in the 2009 season ? Tyler Clarke in the decathlon and Mike Schallmo in the discus.
Friday’s track events will see Ryan McDermott go in the steeplechase, as he is now one of only three Blue Devils ever to run under nine minutes in the event. NCAA Regional qualifier Patricia Loughlin will go in the women’s steeple, while freshman standout Carly Seymour will compete in the women’s 5K and sophomore Christy Adamyk in the 10K. The men’s 5K will see the foursome of Bo Waggoner, James Kostelnik, James Osborne, and Andrew Brodeur.
Clarke will complete the decathlon on Saturday, while Tony Shirk will go in the men’s pole vault and ACC champion Amy Fryt in the women’s joined there by Cassie Ludwig. Duke’s school record holder in the javelin, John Austin, will head for that event, while ACC champion and school record holder Jade Ellis will hit the long jump pit.
Duke’s Saturday on the track will feature indoor IC4A mile champion Cory Nanni in the 1,500m, while the women’s side will see Anna Farias-Eisner, Molly Lehman, and Emily Schwitzer in the event. The women’s 800m will see three regional qualifers in Devotia Moore, Leslie Morrison, and Esther Vermeer, while both teams will enter teams in the 4x800m during day two and the men a 4x400m squad as well.
The final day in the field events will see the Blue Devils return strong with the tandem of Michael Barbas and Mike Schallmo in the shotput and Ellis coming back for the triple jump. Day three will mark the finals competition of the 1500m, 800m and the relays, with the Duke athletes setting their sights on making it back for those races.
Following the IC4A and ECAC meets, Duke will come back for the NCAA Regionals the following weekend, May 29-30, in Greensboro, N.C.
