DURHAM, N.C. --- The Duke Blue Devils had four players selected to this year’s All-ACC lacrosse team, as announced Thursday by the conference offices in Greensboro, N.C. Junior attacker Carolyn Davis, junior attacker Megan Del Monte, freshman midfielder Emma Hamm and senior defender Aiyana Newton earned All-ACC status. It was the second such honor for Davis, while Del Monte, Hamm and Newton won their first such award. Members were chosen through voting by the league’s six coaches with Maryland leading all schools with five honorees.
Davis has been outstanding for the Blue Devils this season, especially considering she was cleared to play just a week before the season opener after spending the off-season rehabilitating from a torn ACL that she suffered in the final game of the 2007 campaign. The native of Skaneateles, N.Y., leads Duke with 47 goals, 60 points and 108 shots and is fourth on the team with 13 assists. Davis has also picked up 23 ground balls, grabbed 20 draw controls and caused 10 turnovers. She was the ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 18 and March 4, the Womenslax.com and Womenslacrosse.com Player of the Week on Feb. 18 and named to the Womenslacrosse.com Weekly Honor Roll on March 4. Davis is also tied for sixth on the Duke records list for season goals, and approaching all-time lists for career goals, assists and points.
Del Monte has quietly put up some great numbers this season on offense. The native of Lutherville, Md., leads the team with 18 assists in her first season as a starter. She ranks second on the Duke squad in goals with 35 and points with 53. Del Monte ranks in the top-10 in the ACC in goals, assists and points per game.
Hamm has made the adjustment to college lacrosse very smoothly this year. Hamm, a product of Wayne, Pa., has tallied at least one point in every game so far and leads the team in draw controls (39) and caused turnovers (25). She also ranks second in assists (16) and ground balls (33). On March 3, Hamm was named WomensLax.com’s National Rookie of the Week and on March 18 honored as WomensLacrosse.com’s National Rookie of the Week.
Newton, a native of Baltimore, Md., is the leader of a defense that is the most-experienced position for the Blue Devils. She has 11 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers this year and has often been the defender called upon to mark the opposing team’s most serious offensive threat. That included shutting out UNC’s Megan Bosica in the second half, allowing Virginia’s Ashley McCulloch just one assist while she was matched with her and limiting B.C.’s Jenna McCabe to one goal. Newton, a three-year starter, leads the senior class with 74 games and 57 starts in her career.
The 2008 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Tournament began today at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. and will continue through Sunday. No. 3 seed Duke knocked off No. 6 Virginia Tech, 19-6, this afternoon and will play No. 2 Virginia on Friday at 3:00 p.m. If the Blue Devils should advance again, they will play in the tournament championship game on Sunday 1:00 p.m.
