DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke Outdoor Track and Field team takes a short trip this weekend to the Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track and Field Stadium at N.C. State. Events will run from 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. on Saturday. Results can be found on www.flashresults.com. It marks the 12th of 19 consecutive weekends with a meet for Duke Track and Field.
Women’s Featured Events: On Saturday morning, a trio of Duke runners in junior Anna Farias-Eisner and sophomores Emily Sherrard and Katie Doswell will compete in the 1,500m. Farias-Eisner’s personal best in the event is 4:29.09, Sherrard’s is 4:34.64 and Doswell’s is 4:37.51. The ECAC standard for the distance is 4:34.44 and the NCAA Regional qualifier is 4:27.80. The Duke record in the 1,500m is 4:14.81 by Shannon Rowbury in 2005.
Freshman Emily Schwitzer will run in the 6k IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Sunday. She placed fifth at the USATF Junior Cross Country Championships on Feb. 15 in San Diego, Calif., with a time of 21:34, and by placing in the top six earned a spot in Scotland. Schwitzer is the fourth Blue Devil to qualify for the U.S. team for the World Cross Country meet, with Sheela Agrawal in 2000, Clara Horowitz in 2003 and Maddie McKeever in 2006 doing it before her. Horowitz was the U.S. Junior Champion when she competed.
Men’s Featured Event: The quartet of junior Geary Gubbins, senior Chris Spooner, freshman Ryan McDermott and freshman Cory Nanni will take part in the 4x1,500m relay in Raleigh on Friday afternoon. The squad is looking to qualify for the Penn Relays with a strong showing and will see if they can make a run at the Duke record of 15:17.80.
Men’s Stars To Watch: On Friday morning, sophomore Mike Schallmo will compete in the discus. He holds the second-longest toss in school history with a 163’-1” at the 2007 IC4A’s. The IC4A qualifying distance is 154’-2” and the NCAA Regional standard is 169’-7.”
Sophomore Michael Kotecki will compete in his hometown of Raleigh in the high jump on Friday afternoon. Kotecki personal best outdoors is 6’-6.75” and his jump of 6’-8.75” indoors this year already has qualified him for the outdoor IC4A’s. The Duke record in the event is 6’-10.75,” which is also the NCAA Regional qualifier.
A Look Ahead: The Duke Track and Field team will host the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium on Friday, Apr. 4 and Saturday, Apr. 5.
