DURHAM, N.C. --- Duke seniors Michael Videira, Joe Germanese and Spencer Wadsworth were all drafted by the New England Revolution on Friday afternoon in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft in Baltimore, Md. Videira was taken with the 18th pick overall in the second round, Germanese was picked 27th overall in the second round and Wadsworth was taken in the fourth round with the 55th pick. The trio became the 15th, 16th and 17th Blue Devils drafted into the MLS.
Videira, a native of Milford, Mass., was a three-time Hermann Trophy semifinalist for national player of the year. He played in 80 matches and started in 78 at Duke. Videira scored 17 goals and ranks tied for sixth in school history with 34 career assists for a total of 68 points. The center midfielder earned third team All-America and Academic All-America honors in his junior and senior seasons, becoming the only player in school history to accomplish that feat twice. Videira earned All-South Region and All-ACC accolades all four years as a Blue Devil. He was a team captain in his senior campaign and finished as one of the most decorated players in the history of Duke soccer.
Germanese transferred to Duke from Vanderbilt after his sophomore season and made an immediate impact in Durham. In his entire collegiate career, Germanese played in 76 games and made starts in 64 of them. The St. Louis, Mo., midfielder/forward tallied 18 goals, 22 assists and 58 points in four seasons. Germanese was the Missouri Valley Conference’s Freshman of the Year at Vanderbilt in 2004 and an All-MVC choice as a sophomore. He was named to the Academic All-America second team and to the All-South Region third team as a senior at Duke.
Wadsworth, who came to Duke from Dallas, Texas, notched 25 goals and 34 assists for 84 points in four seasons. His 34 assists are tied with Videira and former Blue Devil Clint Carnell for sixth on the career list. As a junior, Wadsworth was tied for the most assists in the NCAA with 14. That year, he was an All-South Region first team and All-ACC second team selection. Wadsworth was an ACC All-Tournament team member in both 2005 and 2006. He battled back from injury prior to his senior season and finished with 86 career appearances and 64 starts.
Videira, Germanese and Wadsworth will join fellow Blue Devils Kyle Helton and Jay Heaps on the Revolution this year. Helton, a defender and a 2007 Duke graduate, was selected with the 51st overall pick in the fourth round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. Heaps, who was a two-time All-America defender and graduated from Duke in 1999, was drafted by the Miami Fusion in 1999 with the second overall pick of the draft. He joined the Revolution in 2001.
ACC schools had 11 of the 56 players drafted throughout the four rounds. Duke and Wake Forest led the ACC with three picks each.
