Charleston, S.C. ? Former Duke All-America Ryan Blaum won his first professional golf tournament on Sunday, firing a final-round 63 to take the title at the Hooters’ Tour Charleston Miracle League Open at The Golf Club at Wescott Plantation. The two-time ACC Player of the Year, Blaum won the event by two shots, with his nine-under 63 proving the difference in the final round. Having to finish his third round in the morning on Sunday, Blaum birdied seventeen and eighteen to finish with a 67.
He went out in the afternoon for his final 18 holes of the event and birdied the third and seventh holes, before carding five straight birdies on holes nine through 13. He capped the day off with the decisive birdies on 17 and 18 to clinch his first professional title. Blaum finished the event at 19 under par (269).
“It’s about time I was finally able to close the deal this week,” said the twenty-three year old Blaum. “I have either had the lead or shared the lead in five or six events this season and just wasn’t able to get it done up until this point.”
Blaum, a 2006 Duke graduate, fired rounds of 72-67-67-63 for a four day total of nineteen-under par 269 and a two stroke victory over Rob Johnson (Orlando, FL). Johnson carded a nine-under par 63 in the third round to hold the lead by four strokes heading into the final round, but a three-under par 69 in the final round left him a little short of the surging Blaum.
“I played twenty-four holes today and I was twelve-under par, something you just don’t think is going to happen,” said the Hooters Tour rookie. “I had a really hot putter and I just kept riding it all day. With this being my first professional win, I would like to dedicate it to my late college coach Rod Myers who passed away earlier this year.”
Blaum collects a career best $33,566 for his first career professional win, and now sits in 14th place on the Hooters Tour money list with $55,641.51 earned. He has also spent time on the Nationwide Tour this year, and made the cut in his only PGA event at The Wyndham Championships in Greensboro earlier this summer.
Blaum joins former Duke golfers Kevin Streelman and Nathan Smith as winners on the Hooters Tour this season.
