Woodrow Lipscomb, a former Duke football team captain who earned All-Southern Conference honors in 1937, passed away on Thursday, August 4 in Boydton, Va. He was 89 years old.
Lipscomb, a native of Hinton, W.Va., lettered three seasons as a guard for the Blue Devils from 1935-37, helping Duke to an overall record of 24-5-1 including Southern Conference championships in 1935 and 1936. During his playing tenure, the Blue Devils posted a three-year league ledger of 17-1 and finished the 1936 (11th) and 1937 (20th) campaigns ranked nationally in the Associated Press poll.
As a senior in 1937, Lipscomb served as team captain and received all-league accolades under head coach Wallace Wade as Duke went 7-2-1.
After graduating from Duke in 1938, Lipscomb went on to earn a degree from Duke Law School in 1941. Lipscomb worked for the FBI from 1941-66 before retiring and moving to Boydton. He practiced law in Boydton from 1966 until his death. In 1974, he was appointed Substitute Judge in the General District Courts and the Juvenile and Demostic Relations District Courts of the Tenth Judicial Circuit where he served until January 1, 2004.
