Debra Vento Advances To Finals Of High Jump At NCAAs

SACRAMENTO, CALIF.-- Sophomore Debra Vento kicked off her 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field experience at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University on Thursday with three successful leaps in the high jump competition to advance to the finals on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

A native of Marlboro, N.J., Vento passed on the opening height of 1.70 meters and then hit 1.74 on her first jump. Then on her second jump she hit 1.77 and then finished off the day with a height of 1.80 on her second attempt to advance to the finals.

Vento opened the day among 29 jumpers and is one 15 to advance to the finals. She cleared six feet in three consecutive meets this spring, including her best of 6-1 1/2 at the ACC Championship. Vento is the 2005 ECAC Indoor High Jump Champion and earned an at-large invitation to the NCAA Outdoor Championship where she is seeded sixth.

Three other Blue Devils will also compete late on Saturday evening-- Shannon Rowbury in the 1500 Meter Run at 8:00 p.m. and Paige Miller and Laura Stanley in the 10,000 Meter Run at 10:00 p.m.
