INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Duke University junior Monique Currie added another prestigious honor to her resume on Saturday as the 5-11 guard was named to the 10-member Kodak All-America team at a press conference at the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind.
A native of Washington, D.C., Currie led the seventh-ranked Blue Devils to a 31-5 overall record in a year where Duke lost three starters and other key bench personnel. Currie, the 2005 ACC Player of the Year, averaged 17.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.1 steals and hit 31.7 percent from three-point land. Currie was the only player in the ACC to rank in the top-15 in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.
"It is an honor to have my name listed among the best players to ever play the game of basketball," said Currie. "I had come as a sophomore with Alana to the Kodak All-America press conference and I figured, hopefully, I would be one as well before my career was finished. It is nice to have this dream come true."
Other members of the Kodak All-America team were: Seimone Augustus (LSU), Jacqueline Batteast (Notre Dame), Jessica Davenport (Ohio State), Sandora Irvin (TCU), Janel McCarville (Minnesota), Kendra Wecker (Kansas State), Tan White (Mississippi State), Candice Wiggins (Stanford) and Sophia Young (Baylor).
On the season, Currie scored 20 or more points 13 times, scored double-figures in 35 of 36 games and collected eight double-doubles. In the ACC stats, she ranked fourth in scoring (17.5), ninth in rebounding (7.1), 13th in assists (3.4), ninth in free throw percentage (78.1), eighth in steals (2.14), 14th in assist/turnover ratio (1.13) and fourth in defensive rebounds (4.83). Currie was a clutch performer for the Blue Devils on the season hitting the game-winning shots against Tennessee, N.C. State and Maryland.
Currie has also been named an Associated Press first team All-America, John R. Wooden All-America, USBWA All-America, finalist for the Naismith Trophy, finalist for the John R. Wooden Award and finalist for the State Farm Wade Trophy this season. A senior academically and expected to graduate in May, Currie has not decided if she will return to Duke for her fifth year or declare for the WNBA Draft.
Other Blue Devils who have been named Kodak All-America were Michele VanGorp (1999), Georgia Schweitzer (2001), Alana Beard (2002, 2003, 2004) and Iciss Tillis (2003). It marks the fifth straight year a Blue Devil has been listed among the 10-member Kodak All-America squad.
The Blue Devils advanced to the Elite Eight for the fourth straight year before falling to LSU, 59-49, in the Chattanooga Region of the NCAA Tournament on Monday.
