LEXINGTON, Ky. - J.J. Redick is one of 10 finalists, of which four are from ACC schools, for the 2005 Adolph Rupp Trophy, given by the Commonwealth Athletic Club of Kentucky to the nation's top player.
The ACC dominated the Rupp pre-season Watch List, and continues to lead the field of finalists for the Player of the Year award named after the legendary University of Kentucky coach, who retired in 1972 with 876 victories and four NCAA championships to his credit. Among NCAA coaches with over 500 career wins, Adolph Rupp still maintains the highest winning percentage of all time at 82.2 percent.
The other three ACC players are: Sean May (UNC), Rashad McCants (UNC) and Chris Paul (Wake Forest). The other finalists, in alphabetical order, are: Andrew Bogut (Utah); Ike Diogu (Arizona State); Joey Graham (Oklahoma State); Luther Head (Illinois); Wayne Simien (Kansas); and, Hakim Warrick (Syracuse).
"The performances this year are so solid that it's going to be really tough for our voters to come down to a clear winner in the end - you love to see that kind of a season," said Club spokesman Gerry Calvert.
The 10 Finalists will be reduced to a 5 member Rupp All-American team, to be announced at the conclusion of the regular season. The Rupp Player of the Year will be selected from the All-American Team. The Rupp Player of the Year and Coach of the Year will be announced at the Final Four on Thursday, March 31, in St. Louis.
The selection committee consists of over 40 present and retired sports writers, coaches, TV-radio broadcasters, and sports administrators. From its inception in 1972, the Rupp Award has been considered one of the nation's most prestigious Division I player-of-the year awards. Former winners include: Bill Walton, Larry Bird, Ralph Sampson, Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Shaquille O'Neal, Tim Duncan, and Jameer Nelson.
The first recipient of the Adolph Rupp Cup, awarded in 2004, was Phil Martelli of St. Joseph's University. Coach Martelli will return to this year's ceremony in St. Louis to present this year's Rupp Cup.
