Duke baseball players Tim Layden and Javier Socorro were named to the 2004 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Team on Monday. Layden earned first-team All-Conference honors while Socorro was named to the second team. The All-ACC Team was voted upon by the league's nine head coaches and announced at the ACC Tournament awards cookout on Monday evening.
"I'm very happy for both of those guys," Duke head coach Bill Hillier said. "They've had good seasons and I'm glad to see them recognized for their accomplishments. I hope they can carry that over into the tournament and maybe be named to the All-Tournament Team later this week."
Layden was named to the All-ACC first team as an at-large player. A junior from Deer Park, N.Y., Layden has been a leader on the mound and at the plate for the Blue Devils in 2004. Layden leads Duke with six home runs, 46 RBIs and a .436 on-base percentage while ranking second on the team with a .316 batting average and third with 13 doubles and 39 runs scored. Additionally, he leads the Blue Devils with 15 starts on the mound and is tied for the team lead with five wins and 75 strikeouts.
Socorro, a sophomore left fielder from Miami, Fla., leads Duke and is fifth in the ACC with a .368 batting average. He also leads the Blue Devils with 74 hits and three triples and is second with 14 doubles and 41 runs scored. He is the team leader with 23 multiple-hit games, eight three-hit games and two four-hit games.
Layden and Socorro became the first Blue Devils to earn All-ACC Baseball Team honors since 1999, when Vaughn Schill was a first-team selection and Stephen Cowie was named to the second team.
Duke begins play in the ACC Tournament on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. against Virginia in Salem, Va.
