DURHAM, N.C. - Duke guard/forward Luol Deng declared himself eligible for the 2004 NBA Draft that will be held on June 24 in New York City. Deng indicated that he will not hire an agent at this point, therefore retaining the possibility to return to Duke for his sophomore season in 2004-05.
"I am pleased that this portion of the process is over," said Deng. "The opportunity to pursue a career in professional basketball has been a dream of mine. With help from my family and coaches, I will continue to gather information to make the best possible decision regarding my future."
"We're supportive of Luol's decision," said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "Based on our information, it is apparent that he will be a high pick in this year's NBA Draft. We will thoroughly examine any available information and utilize our resources here at Duke to help Luol make a decision that is best for him and his family."
During his freshman season, Deng was Duke's second-leading scorer (15.1) and rebounder (6.9). Deng became just the 10th freshman in ACC history to lead league rookies in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage (.475). A Freshman All-America selection by The Sporting News and Basketball Times, he was named the Most Outstanding Player after leading the Blue Devils to the Atlanta Regional championship to earn a trip to the Final Four. Deng was named ACC Rookie of the Week six times in 2003-04, tying for the second-most freshman honors total in league history.
