Duke's Peter Lamade and Matt Zash have been named to the 2004 All-ACC team for men's lacrosse, announced on Thursday by the league office. The All-ACC team is determined by a vote of the league's four head coaches.
Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia each had three players named to the unit in addition to Duke's pair of selections. There are only three members of this year's team who have been named to an All-ACC team in multiple years -- Maryland's Chris Passavia and Virginia's Tillman Johnson are both three-time selections, while North Carolina's Jed Prossner was tabbed All-ACC for the second straight year.
Lamade, a freshman midfielder from Chevy Chase, Md., ranks fourth on the Duke team in scoring with 16 points on 11 goals and five assists. The only freshman named to the squad, Lamade's two top games this season came in ACC action with three goals and one assist versus Maryland and three goals and two assists against North Carolina.
"Peter has exceeded all of our expectations as a freshman," Duke head coach Mike Pressler said. "From day one, he has established himself as an impact player. To achieve this honor as a freshman is a tremendous honor."
Zash, a sophomore midfielder from Massapequa, N.Y., is fifth on the team in scoring with 11 points on eight goals and three assists. In addition, Zash ranks second on the club with 28 ground balls and has won 27-of-62 face-offs.
"Next to Jimmy Gonnella and Kevin Cassese, Matt Zash is the most complete midfielder I have ever coached," Pressler said. "He has been our leader in the midfield all season long. I have said this before and it remains true, it is more difficult to be named All-ACC than All-America, and we couldn't be prouder of this accomplishment for both Peter and Matt."
Duke will meet Maryland in the ACC Tournament semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
