The Duke University Board of Trustees over the weekend reappointed to a five-year term Joe Alleva, Duke's director of athletics. Alleva, a member of the Duke athletic department since 1980, was named the school's sixth director of athletics in 1998. Previously, he served as Duke's associate athletic director for 11 years.
Under Alleva's leadership, Duke has won 29 Atlantic Coast Conference championships and three of the school's six national championships. The Blue Devils finished seventh in the 1999 Sears Directors' Cup, which rates athletics departments based on the success of its teams. Among schools that finished in the top 25 of the 2000 Sears Directors' Cup standings, Duke ranked No. 1 in graduation rate, with 91 percent of its student-athletes earning their degrees. In 2000-01, Duke won a school-record seven ACC Championships.
Alleva also has been a successful fund-raiser. In 1998, the Campaign for Duke set a goal of $65 million for athletics and, less than three years later, increased the standard to $130 million after the department brought in more than $110 million. The Campaign for Duke ends in December 2003. Through these fund-raising efforts, Duke has built the Yoh Football Center, a $20 million, 70,000-suare-foot facility completed last summer; the Schwartz-Butters Athletic Center, a 41,000-square-foot addition to Cameron Indoor Stadium that houses Duke's men's and women's basketball teams and an academic center for all Blue Devil athletes; and the Sheffield Center and Ambler Tennis Stadium, a pair of state-of-the-art tennis facilities. Koskinen Stadium, the home field for the Blue Devil soccer and lacrosse teams, also has been enhanced, and the baseball team played its first season under the lights in 2001.
In addition, Alleva established in the spring of 1999 an Athletics Advisory Board made up of influential business and sports leaders throughout the country who are interested in the Duke athletics program.
