Duke head football coach Carl Franks announced on Friday that staff member Jim Pry has been named Offensive Coordinator for the Blue Devils.
Pry enters his third season on the Duke staff following 13 years as the offensive coordinator at East Stroudsburg. He served as quarterbacks coach in 2001 before being elevated to Passing Game Coordinator prior to the 2002 campaign.
Duke opens the 2003 season at Virginia on August 30. The Blue Devils will return all 11 starters from a year ago including Second Team All-ACC running back Alex Wade, who rushed for 979 yards while matching a school single-season record with six 100-yard rushing games.
QUOTES
Carl Franks:
"I've wanted to be able to name an offensive coordinator for a long time, and I feel comfortable with Coach Pry's knowledge and expertise of our offensive scheme. Coach Pry has been instrumental in the play-calling since his arrival at Duke, and obviously he will continue to have a major role with these decisions. All phases of our program are a collaborative effort by the staff, and Coach Pry will coordinate this effort for our offense."
Jim Pry:
"My role is to guide us in the direction we want to go offensively; to keep us on schedule. I think we got significantly better last year. It certainly has a long ways to go, but we've avoided turnovers better. That's what we're trying to get to -- to be number one in turnover ratio. We have to be able to take advantage of what the defense gives us -- throw the ball if we have to or run the ball if we have to and we've shown we can do that."
"Certainly I'm excited about what happened last year -- we were in games. You're going to be good whenever you win close games. That's when you know a team is good. And those teams that beat us in close games were good teams. Offensively, I'm excited about the quarterback. Adam Smith has experience Chris Dapolito has experience and there's no substitute for that."
