Dec. 10, 2003
Duke rookie tight end Ben Patrick has been named Third Team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News, announced this week by the national publication. Patrick is joined by teammate John Talley on the magazine's Freshman All-ACC squad.
Patrick caught 17 passes in 2003 for 218 yards and one touchdown despite missing two games due to injury. The Savannah, Ga., native ranked fifth on the team in both receptions and receiving yards, and caught a season-best three passes against both Virginia and Clemson.
Talley, a rookie cornerback from Duncan, S.C., finished the year with 32 tackles while tying for the team lead with his two interceptions. Both of his interceptions came in Week 11 at Clemson while his high-tackle game of the season was six versus Rice.
