Upcoming Event: Women's Soccer versus Wake Forest on August 5, 2026 at 7 p.m.

Nov. 11, 2003
The Duke University field hockey team was awarded the second seed in the 2003 NCAA Field Hockey Championship Tuesday evening. The Blue Devils, 17-3 on the year, are hosting first and second round games at Williams Field for the first time in school history. The second seed is the highest ever in the NCAA Tournament for Duke as well.
First round games are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15 with Duke taking on American at 11:00 a.m. in the opener. The second contest between Old Dominion and Richmond is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Saturday's winners advance to play at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16 with a trip to the Final Four in Amherst, Mass., on the line.
"We knew going into the ACC Tournament that our performance would have serious ramifications on the NCAA Championship pairings. Clearly beating North Carolina was important for us in earning the right to host the first two rounds," said head coach Beth Bozman. "Now we have to focus on one game at a time and playing Duke hockey."
In Bozman's first year at Duke, the team has already set school-records for wins (17), consecutive wins (nine) and goals scored (90). Bozman, a 17-year coaching veteran, has led her teams to nine NCAA appearances including trips to the NCAA championship game in 1996 and 1998 while at Princeton. In eight previous NCAA Tournaments, Bozman has compiled a 13-8 record.
The NCAA appearance is the fifth in Duke history and marks the first time the Blue Devils have made the tournament in back-to-back years. Last season, Duke topped James Madison, 2-1, in the opening round before falling to eventual national champion Wake Forest, 2-0, in the quarterfinals.
Maryland, Connecticut and Michigan State are also hosting first and second round contests. A complete NCAA Field Hockey Championship bracket can be found at http://www.ncaasports.com/images/ncaasports/arc_image/d1_fhko_bracket_2003.pdf.
