DURHAM, N.C. - The following are excerpts from interim Duke head football coach Ted Roof:
"I think that you need to get to know Duke. There are certain ins and outs at Duke that are unique, some situations that are unique to the Duke situation and you've got to get to know Duke. Certainly I think we can be a good football situation. Some many times one guy gets his head chopped off for what a lot of people have done and obviously we all take a part in this. Me personally, if we had been playing better defense this might not have happened. We all take a responsibility for it. We've got to make the best of this situation and all continue to stay together and work hard together and try to find a way to win."
"The thing that we want to do is put all of our energy and all of focus into trying to win this week. There's so much new stuff that is going to be happening in the next couple of days. I know there are a lot of things that are going to happen that I have no idea they're going to happen. We are just trying to get ready to beat N.C. State."
"There are some people in my past and background that I am certainly going to lean on that have been successful."
"Jim Pry is in charge of the offense and yes I am going to have input. We will have a lot of time to sit down and talk and discuss things to see what we are and see how can improve ourselves."
"It is a crazy business and I have certainly been in crazy, different situation but I don't think we can sit around and dwell on it. We just got to go to work, make the best of it and not look back."
"There was a lot of disappoint and frustration. We challenged our players to compete, play with more emotion, play with more enthusiasm in the second half and I think they did that. Obviously we didn't in the first half and for us to have a chance to win at Duke we have got to play that way for 60 minutes. It can't be a 30 minutes deal or 48 minute deal, we have got to play that way for 60 minutes because our margin of error is not that big."
"This may sound like coach talk but right now all we are worried about is 1-0. We are not worried about 2-3, 3-2, 4-1 all we want to do is be 1-0 right now."
"It is an opportunity. It is one that I certainly didn't want to come upon as it happened. You want to see your boss successful. Good things happen for everybody when the boss is successful. I sure didn't want it to happen like this because Carl [Franks] is a good friend, a good man and a good coach."
The following is an excerpt from Alex Wade:
"It was odd for me. I have been here five years now and this was the first practice that I'd ever been on the field that coach Franks wasn't there."
The following is an excerpt from Ryan Fowler:
"Coach Roof is going to bring some intensity and demand more out of it just because that is the way he is. He doesn't get a chance to work with the offense much and now he will have a bigger influence there and he also more of a say now. He is a good motivational guy, he is a good speaker. This is his team now, so he is going to change the team."
