Duke freshman Tim Layden was named a second team Freshman All-American by Baseball America on Tuesday. An outfielder and pitcher for the Blue Devils, Layden was selected to the team as a utility player.
Layden, a native of Deer Park, N.Y., played in 54 games offensively and led Duke with 73.2 innings pitched. An extremely versatile player, Layden played four positions during the year (LF, RF, 1B, P) in addition to serving as the designated hitter.
On the mound, Layden posted a 4-8 record and 5.62 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 16 appearances, including 10 starts. His four wins ranked him third on the team while his 55 strikeouts were the second-most on the squad. Layden also played in 54 games, starting 50, on offense. He hit .282 with 11 doubles, three home runs and 36 RBIs.
"To be a utility All-American you have to be a special player," Duke head coach Bill Hillier said, "and Tim is certainly that. I think it's awesome that he's done that for himself and for the program. It rewards his approach to the game and his consistency. His pitching was very strong in all but two appearances and day in and day out, his hitting was very solid. I hope he can build on that, stay healthy and have more great things to come during his career at Duke."
Layden, who is playing summer baseball for the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod Baseball League, is the first Blue Devil to earn Freshman All-America honors since. J.D. Alleva and Brent Reid were named to Collegiate Baseball's Freshman All-America team in 1998. He is one of five Atlantic Coast Conference players to garner 2002 Freshman All-America honors. Florida State shortstop Stephen Drew was named the Freshman of the Year and was joined on the first team by Georgia Tech second baseman Eric Patterson and Georgia Tech outfielder Jeremy Slayden. North Carolina catcher Chris Iannetta joined Layden on the second team.
