The Duke Blue Devils won the first game of the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, defeating the Maryland Terrapins, 10-9, Tuesday evening at Florida Power Park in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Eight Blue Devil players, led by senior shortstop Kevin Kelly, junior first baseman Larry Broadway and freshman third baseman Grant Stanley with three hits apiece, combined for 16 base hits as Duke defeated Maryland for the third time in four meetings this season.
"I'm pleased with what we did offensively," Duke head coach Bill Hillier said. "I thought that Ryan Sember did a pretty good job. And Paul DeMarco did a great job. They gave us a chance to play tomorrow."
Duke jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kelly drew a one-out walk, adavanced to third on a single up the middle by Broadway and scored on a single to center field by freshman designated hitter Tim Layden.
Maryland answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Left fielder Daryl Whitmer led off with a single to left field and scored on a triple to right-center by right fielder Matt Swope. With one out, Swope scored on a balk. The Blue Devils got out of the inning with no further damage.
Duke claimed a 6-2 lead with a five-run second inning. Sophomore left fielder Drew Jerdan reached second on a two-base error to lead off the inning. Freshman third baseman Grant Stanley hit a bunt single, advancing Jerdan to third. Junior center fielder Doug Bechtold hit a sacrifice bunt back to starting pitcher Sean Kane, who threw wild to first base. Bechtold went all the way to third on the play, while Jerdan and Stanley scored. Junior right fielder Brian Patrick extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single to left field, plating Bechtold. Kelly doubled to left-center, extending his hitting streak to 10 games, and sent Patrick to third. Patrick and Kelly scored on sacrifice flies by Broadway and Layden, respectively.
Maryland scored one in the second and two in the third to make it a 6-5 game. Designated hitter Will Frazier doubled to left-center and scored on a single by Whitmer in the second. Shortstop John McCurdy led off the third inning with a single and first baseman Jason Maxey was hit by a pitch. McCurdy scored on a sacrifice fly and Maxey crossed home on a single by Frazier.
Duke put up two runs in the top of the fourth, increasing the lead to 8-5. Patrick, who has at least two base hits in seven of the last eight games, singled to center field with one out and Kelly followed with his second double of the game. Broadway sent them both home on a single to right field.
In the bottom of the frame, Maryland scored one run on three walks and two hit batters. The Blue Devils were helped with their first double play of the day.
Duke extended its lead to 10-6 with one run in the fifth and one in the sixth. Stanley, who was hitless in his last 18 at bats entering the game, doubled down the left field line in the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Patrick. Sophomore second baseman Bryan Smith hit a single up the middle and Jerdan singled him home in the sixth.
The Terrapins made it a one-run game with three runs in bottom of the sixth. McCurdy hit his 19th home run of the season to lead off the inning.
