Results
Florida State won its first men's Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship while the North Carolina women claimed their second consecutive crown at the 2002 ACC Championships held at the University of Virginia.
The Seminole men, who finished second the last two years, took the championship with 201.50 points. Clemson was second with 158 points and North Carolina came in third with 118 points. NC State (103) was fourth followed by Virginia (67.50), Wake Forest (63), Maryland (17) and Duke with 10 points.
North Carolina won four women's events Saturday to finish with 176.50 points. Florida State (128 points) edged Georgia Tech by one point for second place. NC State (99.50) was fourth followed by Clemson (99), Virginia (92), Maryland (49), Wake Forest (29) and Duke with 18 points.
Sophomore Shalane Flanagan of North Carolina broke her own ACC Meet record in the 1500 Meters with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:16.19. Teammate Alice Schmidt won her second consecutive 800 meter run. The sophomore finished with an automatic time of 2:04.74. Clemson's Jamine Moton won her 13th ACC throwing title when she took the shot put with an automatic mark of 55'05.00. North Carolina's Laura Gerraughty was second in the shot put and had an automatic result of 53'10.25. Florida State senior Teresa Bundy took the triple jump and automatically qualified at 43'09.00. She also won the 100 meters with a time of 11.51 seconds.
On the men's side, Dwight Thomas of Clemson captured three events on the day. The freshman took the 100 meter dash in 10.27 seconds and 110 hurdles with a time of 13.74 seconds. He later won the 200 meters in 20.73 seconds.
