UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond Director of Athletics Jim Miller announced today the hiring of Joanne Boyle as the new head women's basketball coach. Boyle, an assistant at Duke for nine seasons, becomes the 16th head coach in the 83-year history of Richmond women's basketball.
"Coach Boyle played an integral role in Duke's rise to the upper echelon of women's basketball," said Miller. "We are excited that she has joined our program and believe she will provide the vision and leadership we need to be successful at the national level."
As an assistant at Duke, Boyle helped direct the careers of numerous all-Atlantic Coast Conference selections and national honorees. Among them the past three ACC Player's of the Year and two consecutive Kodak All-America selections in Georgia Schweitzer (2001) and Alana Beard (2002).
Boyle has played a vital role in the program's success on the court, an impressive nine-year record of 265-67. The Blue Devils have made an NCAA Tournament appearance each of the past eight seasons. This past season, Duke (31-4) won its third straight ACC crown in route to its second Final Four appearance in the past four seasons.
A 1985 graduate of Duke with a degree in economics, Boyle shone on the hardcourt as four-time letterwinner in the women's basketball program. During her senior season, she captained the Blue Devil team that set then-school records for most wins and most ACC wins in a season. Boyle concluded her senior year second on the Duke scoring charts and first in assists. Her 75 steals during the 1984-85 campaign ranked number one among season-best marks for 16 seasons until Beard broke the mark two seasons ago.
Upon graduation from Duke, Boyle played professionally in Europe for three years. For two seasons, she was the leading scorer of the Luxembourg League before spending her third season in the German Elite Division. She also coached a second division women's basketball team in Europe for two years. Prior to coaching at Duke, Boyle served as head coach for one season at Luxembourg (Div. II) from 1990-91.
Boyle earned a master's degree in public health from the University of North Carolina in 1989.
