VILLANOVA, PA (December 10, 2002) - The Philadelphia Charge of the Women's United Soccer Association named Ken Pollard assistant coach on Tuesday. Pollard fills one of the spots on head coach Mark Krikorian's staff that was vacated when former assistants Pia Sundhage and John Natale joined the Boston Breakers. Sundhage was named head coach of the Breakers at the end of August, while Natale followed her to continue to serve as an assistant.
"We are very happy with the experience Ken brings to our team," general manager Tim Murphy said. "Mark (Krikorian) has put a great deal of effort into hiring the right personnel to assist him and we believe that Ken is an excellent choice."
"Ken has tremendous knowledge of the game," Krikorian said. "His belief system on how the game should be played coincides with mine and he has the ability to bring fresh ideas to the table."
A native of Wales, Pollard, 37, joins the Charge after serving as an assistant coach for the men's team at Duke University. In his one year there, he helped mentor the Blue Devils to an 11-8-1 regular-season mark and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
From 1997-2001, Pollard served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Southern Connecticut State University. As a coach, he helped the Owls to a pair of NCAA Division II national championships. He also won two national championships as a player at SCSU.
Pollard has also served as an assistant coach with the New York/New Jersey Metrostars of Major League Soccer (2000) and played for the under-18 Welsh national team.
"I'm excited to be here," Pollard said. "Mark is an excellent coach and I hope to learn a lot and contribute even more to the continuing success of the Charge and the WUSA."
