Duke Men Finish 3rd, Women 4th at NCAA Southeast Region Cross Country Championships

Greenville, NC. - The Duke men's cross country team finished third and the 14th-ranked women's team finished fourth at the 2002 NCAA Southeast Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Overton's Lake Kristi. Top finishers for the Blue Devils were Caroline Bierbaum and Chris Williams.

The top 25 finishers in both the men's and women's races were named to the All-Southeast Region. Blue Devil women honored were freshmen Bierbaum, Clara Horowitz and Shannon Rowbury. The men also had three honorees in Williams, a junior, and sophomores Nick Schneider and Michael Hatch.

The Blue Devil women had all seven runners finish in the top 45 out of 185 runners in the 6K run. Bierbaum finished fourth overall and Horowitz finished sixth. Rowbury finished 22nd overall and third for Duke. Freshmen Sally Meyerhoff and Laura Stanley finished 36th and 41st, respectively. Junior Heidi Hullinger placed 41st and sophomore Phebe Ko finished 44th overall.

Williams received the fourth bye to earn him a trip to the NCAA Championships when he placed sixth overall in the 8K run . Schneider and Hatch placed 12th and 16th, respectively. Jared Moore finished 36th and Ian Cronin placed 55th overall. Charles Salmen placed 79th and Morgan Clark was 84th.

The top two teams in the region are automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 25. The Blue Devils must wait until Monday at 5 p.m. to find out if they qualify for the 2002 NCAA Championships.
