Headlined by seniors Ben Erdeljac and Mike Hart, five Duke players were named to the All-ACC Academic Football Team released Tuesday by the league office.
Erdeljac and Hart were joined by teammates Chris Douglas, Shawn Johnson and Jim Scharrer on the team.
Erdeljac, an Oakmont, Pa., native who caught a team-leading 42 passes in 2001, makes his third appearance on the team to join Ben Fordham (1972-74), Bill Obremskey (1981-83), Mike Diminick (1986-88) and Sims Lenhardt (1997-99) as the only Blue Devils to accomplish the feat.
Hart, a First Team All-ACC tight end from Sayville, N.Y., who had 30 catches for 476 yards and four touchdowns this past fall, makes his second straight All-ACC Academic squad.
Douglas, a sophomore tailback from Sherrills Ford, N.C., paced Duke in rushing (841 yards) and scoring (48 points) while leading the ACC and finishing seventh nationally in all-purpose yards per game (168.1) in 2001. He also earned Honorable Mention All-ACC accolades.
Johnson, a sophomore defensive end from Fairport, N.Y., finished 15th on the team with 31 total tackles while Scharrer, a freshman linebacker from Erie, Pa., was third on the squad with 69 total tackles.
Duke and Clemson led the way with five selections each followed by Georgia Tech (4), Maryland (4), Virginia (3), North Carolina (2), Florida State (2), N.C. State (2) and Wake Forest (1). To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
