Top-seeded Granville beat Duke's No. 2 Ansley Cargill 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3 in today's final. Last night Granville and Gabriela Lastra beat Pepperdine's Paola Palencia and Ipek Senoglu 6-2, 6-3 to claim the women's doubles title.
Granville, a sophomore from Chicago, becomes the first women's player to ever repeat as Rolex singles champion and extends her win streak to 54 straight matches dating back to last season. It was the first time in 21 matches that she had been extended to three sets. She is now 19-0 this season and beat five top 30 players en route to the title.
Cargill, a freshman from Atlanta, falls to 17-2 this season with the loss. Cargill fought off match point four times at 5-4 in the second set. Granville, who was fighting the flu, broke Cargill's serve in the third and final games of the third set.
"I felt pretty pumped up after saving four match points, but I knew that Laura would never let down her guard and that she would come back to attack," Cargill said. "And that's what she did. I was relieved but, I also knew I was going to have to save myself because it was going to be a tough third set."
The last time Cargill and Granville faced each other was in the 1999 USTA Girls' 18s national singles final - a 6-3, 6-4 Granville win (they also reached the national doubles final as partners last season). Their next meeting could come in two weeks at the Feb. 15-18 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc., where Duke and Stanford will be among the favorites.
"We help each other get better," Cargill said. "It shows we still have to room to grow especially if we're going to play on the pro tour. It's another stepping stone."
The ITA Grand Slam singles title is Granville's third. She won the Rolex and NCAA titles last season as a freshman. She is also the fourth straight Stanford player to capture the Rolex women's singles title. Cargill was making her second straight Grand Slam final appearance. In October she won the Riviera All-American Championships.
Complete tournament information is available on the official website of the ITA, www.ITAtennis.com.
The ITA Grand Slam also includes the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships, ITA/Riviera All-American Championships and year-end NCAA Championships.
Duke's Ansley Cargill:
On saving four match points in the second set:
"I felt pretty pumped up
after
saving four match points, but I knew that Laura would never let down her
guard and that she would come back to attack. And that's what she did. I was
relieved but, I also knew I was going to have to save myself because it was
going to be a tough third set."
On the challenge of playing Granville:
"We help each other get better. It
shows we still have to room to grow especially if we're going to play on the
pro tour. It's another stepping stone."
"We were neck and neck there for a little while with our serves and I started backing off the baseline a little bit in the third set which gave her room to attack, but not too much room . She didn't miss a ball when she was attacking and I needed to take that away from her. I just need to work on that a little bit more."
