FARMERS BRANCH, TEXAS (Feb. 1) - Duke's Marko Cerenko and Ramsey Smith picked up singles wins on Feb. 1 to advance to the second round of the 2001 Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships held at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
After dropping the opening set, 7-6, in a tiebreaker to Ajay Ramaswami of Louisiana State, the second-seeded Cerenko won the final two sets, 6-2 and 6-4. Smith earned a first round 6-2, 6-4 victory over Andy Leber of Texas-Arlington. Duke's Andres Pedroso fell in his opening round match to Stanford's K.J. Hippensteel, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1.
On Friday, Cerenko will face Georgia's Lesley Joseph, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Southern Methodist's Alexis Rudinski while Smith advances to meet third-seeded Matias Boeker of Georgia, who defeated Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles action, the Blue Devil tandem of Pedroso and Ted Rueger defeated Cody Hubbell and Jarin Skube of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-2.
