BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Jordan Cila scored in the 100th minute of play and Duke defeated Campbell 2-1 in an overtime men's soccer match on Wednesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Blue Devils (7-5-0) won their third-straight match, while Campbell (2-8-1) dropped its third in a row. Duke improved to 1-3-0 in overtime contests this year, while the Camels are winless (0-4-1) in five extra time outings.
Cila nearly scored in the ninth minute of the game when his shot hit the right post. Duke broke in front in the 28th minute of play when Trevor Perea's cross was headed home by Mark Mattern, the first goal of the season for the 6-foot-4 junior. The Devils held a 1-0 lead at the break, taking seven shots in the opening period to six for Campbell.
Campbell equalized through Shea Geyer in the 59th minute. Antonio Da Silva fed Dan Johansen on the right flank, then the Camel senior squared a pass to Geyer in the box. The sophomore from LaGrange, N.C., then hit a left-footed shot inside the right post for his second strike of the year.
Camel sweeper Steve Hollinger helped preserve the deadlock in the 78th minute when he headed Justin Bodiya's shot off the line.
In the extra period, Duke keeper Justin Trowbridge dove to his right to steer Jason Kirk's drive past his right post.
The winning strike came when Cila linked with Noah Lewkowitz in the box and slotted a shot inside the right post after he sent Camel keeper Billy Englishby diving the wrong way.
Duke held a 15-13 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Trowbridge finished with four saves, while Englishby had two stops.
Campbell travels to UNC Greensboro on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Duke hosts Virginia on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
