VENICE, Fla., (Aug. 24) - Beth Bauer, the 1999 ACC player of the year and member of the 2000 U.S. Curtis Cup Team, improved on her second-round, three-under-par 69 with a five-under-par 67 in the third round of the 2000 LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament for a 209 (-7) total to take a two-stroke lead over Hee-Won Han (211, -5) of Seoul, Korea, heading into final-round play. Bauer carded six birdies and one bogey en route to her third-round 67, while Han moved into second place via five birdies and a bogey for a four-under-par 68.
"I've made a lot of good putts this week, so my putter has been key," said Bauer, who carded four bogeys on the front nine of the Plantation Golf and Country Club's 6,245-yard Bobcat Course. "I've been able to eliminate a lot of bogeys with my chipping and putting, which has been great for me this week. This golf course is like coming back home. I love putting on these Florida greens."
Bauer got off to a good start with a birdie on the par-4 first hole, then added birdies on holes four, six and nine to make the turn at four-under-par for the day and six-under-par for the tournament. A birdie on the par-4 11th hole put Bauer at five-under-par for the day, but she dropped back to four-under-par with her lone bogey of the day, at the par-5 13th hole. The two-time NGCA All-American sank a birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole to finish at six-under-par 209 with her third-round 67.
Han, who started the day five strokes behind second-round leader Soo Yun Kang of Seoul, Korea, carded birdies on holes two, seven and eight to make the turn at three-under-par for the day and four-under-par for the tournament. Han's only bogey of the day came at the par-4 10th hole, dropping her to three-under-par for the tournament and two-under-par for the day, but she recovered quickly with a birdie on the par-4 11th hole. Han's fifth and final birdie of the day came at the par-5 16th hole, leaving her in second place at 211 (-5), two strokes behind Bauer.
"I felt a lot more comfortable today," said Han, who played in the second-to-last pairing with the 20-year-old Bauer. "At first, at the beginning of the tournament, I was very nervous, but I feel more comfortable now."
The 149-player field was cut to 75 players after the second round, and only the top 30 players from the Venice sectional will move on to the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, Oct. 17-20, at LPGA International's Champions Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. In the event of a tie for the 30th and final spot, there will be a sudden-death playoff to determine the 30th player who will move on to the Daytona Beach event.
Kang, who set a Bobcat Course record with a 65 (-7) in the second round, carded a two-over-par 74 in the third round to drop into third place behind Han at 212 (-4). Former LPGA Tour player Suzy Green is fourth at 215 (-1), while first-round leader Ji Hyun Suh of Korea is fifth at even-par 216.
Reigning NCAA individual champion Jenna Daniels is tied for 34th at 223 (+7) after a third-round 76 (+4), while 2000 U.S. Women's Amateur champion Marcy Newton and 1998 U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Women's Amateur runner-up Jenny Chuasiriporn are tied for 43rd at 224 (+8) after shooting a 74 (+2) and 79 (+7) in the third round, respectively.
The Venice qualifier is the first of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2000. The second LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament, scheduled for Sept. 12-15, will be played at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The top 30 finishers from the Rancho Mirage qualifier, the Venice sectional qualifiers, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status, as well as the seven players who finished fourth through 10th on the 2000 SBC Futures Tour money list will travel to the LPGA's Final Qualifying Tournament.
