The U.S. team, which had already clinched a berth in FIBA's 2001 World Championship for Young Men, lost for the first time in five games in the tournament. Argentina and the Dominican Republic, which beat Brazil 77-73 in the third-place game, also advanced to next year's world championships in Japan.
Duke's Jason Williams scored 17 points for the United States, which shot 36.2 percent (25-for-69) from the field and 30.0 percent (6-for-20) from beyond the arc against Argentina, well off the marks of 51.7 percent and 41.0 percent it managed over the first four games.
Williams finished as the tournament's assist leader with 29.
Argentina (4-1) closed the first half with an 11-4 run to take a 41-39 lead. Williams hit a 3-pointer to bring the U.S. team within 50-45, but Argentina went on a 10-3 run to lead 60-48 with 10:56 to play.
Zack Randolph and Jason Richardson, who will be teammates at Michigan State next season, each scored 12 points, while Illinois' Brian Cook added 11.
Carlos Delfina scored 29 points for Argentina, while tournament MVP Luis Scola added 15.
