Men's Lacrosse Knocks Off Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (April 28) - The No. 19 Nittany Lions men's lacrosse team lost their last home game of the season, April 28, against No. 8 Duke. Although the score remained close throughout the match, the Blue Devils won 6-5.
With five minutes left to go in the first quarter junior midfielder Eric Wood (Deferiet, NY) took advantage of an extra man offense opportunity to score a goal off of an assist from sophomore Will Driscoll (Fairport, NY). Duke's Greg Patchak answered with a goal of his own to tie the score 1-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Duke's defense held the Lions allowing them to score only one goal. Junior midfielder Ted Holmes (Flourtown, Pa.) broke through to score the Lions' second goal. Duke scored three goals, including an extra man offense goal, in the second quarter to lead at the half by a score of 2-4.
After the half, Penn State's senior captains took control offensively. Senior tri-captain Don Mayerhofer (Rockville Center, NY) scored an unassisted goal with 14 minutes to go in the third quarter. With one minute left, senior tri-captain David Washo (Rochester, NAY) scored his second goal of the season with an assist from Wood. The Blue Devils scored an EMO goal with only four seconds to go before the final quarter. Entering the fourth the Blue Devils led 4-6.
The Lions earned the last goal with a shot from Holmes for his second goal of the game. For the remainder of the game Penn State's defense held off Duke, but it was not enough to overcome the Blue Devils' early lead.
This loss brought the Lions' overall record to 6-7, and their ECAC conference record remains 2-3. Duke's record now stands at 9-4. Duke tallied 41 shots, and Penn State had 27. Duke's goalie saved 7 shots allowing five. Penn State goalie Matt Vallone (Corning, NY) saved 17, allowing 7.
