Tyrina Jones was named
D1Softball's Comeback Player of the Year, the organization announced Wednesday morning.
After missing her senior season at Purdue due to a knee injury, Jones transferred to Duke to use her final year of eligibility. In her one-year stint with the Blue Devils, Jones made her mark on the Duke offense. She was one of just three players to earn a spot in the starting lineup in all 60 games this season
.
The starting third baseman reached career highs in batting average (.330), hits (68), home runs (24) and RBI (82). She set the single-season RBI record during the series opener at Boston College, driving in four runs in the 12-2 win over the Eagles. She also set the program's single-season home run record with her solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to help guide Duke to a run-rule victory over Clemson.
Her 24 home runs and 82 RBI rank ninth and seventh in the NCAA, respectively. The graduate student homered in five straight games after a tallying a three-run blast in the opening game against Boston College, a two-run shot against No. 7 Tennessee and one in all three games of the North Carolina series for the longest streak in the NCAA, tied with Taylor Pipkins of Clemson. She capped her final year with a NFCA Second Team All-Region nod, the first her career.
